Flowing with the T I D E..

11:52

This world is honestly a very interesting place to live in. If you'll just look outside your window all day, you'll see enough things to capture your attention and you'll get more than enough stuff to talk about. Lots of things happen daily, good, bad, ugly! There is a constant battle for our attention by so many things and at the end of the day we discover that we could actually diagnose ourselves with ADHD. This is because with all the happenings we are constantly trying to keep up with life. Our attention keeps shifting from one event to another. The worst part is not just that our attention keeps shifting, but that we try to contribute to everything and slowly like rubber bands we approach our breaking point and we get so overshadowed with life and it's happening that we do not realize when we actually loose ourselves in the midst of it all.

Matthew 14
24-26 Meanwhile, the boat was far out to sea when the wind came up against them and they were battered by the waves. At about four o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them walking on the water. They were scared out of their wits. “A ghost!” they said, crying out in terror.
27 But Jesus was quick to comfort them. “Courage, it’s me. Don’t be afraid.”
28 Peter, suddenly bold, said, “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.”
29-30 He said, “Come ahead.”
Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the water to Jesus. But when he looked down at the waves churning beneath his feet, he lost his nerve and started to sink. He cried, “Master, save me!”
31 Jesus didn’t hesitate. He reached down and grabbed his hand. Then he said, “Faint-heart, what got into you?”
32-33 The two of them climbed into the boat, and the wind died down. The disciples in the boat, having watched the whole thing, worshiped Jesus, saying, “This is it! You are God’s Son for sure!

This story is one that is pretty fascinating and easy to relate with as Christians.
A little background story, after Jesus had fed the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish, He sent His disciples on ahead because He wanted to spend some time praying. Now there are times in our lives when God will ask to do things, go to places, speak to people and our response should be obedience. The disciples didn't argue with Jesus, at least there was no record of that, they obeyed because they trusted in Him. To obey God we must trust in Him knowing that He is the Almighty and that He loves us and that all things will work together for our good because we love Him.

The trouble with the disciples begins when Jesus reveals Himself to them. This makes me think because really a revelation of God to us shouldn't bring trouble. The truth is that it should take away the trouble but what happens most times, we have the idea of how we 'expect' God to move. In fact it is easier to work with a preconceived idea of what you expect the revelation of God to look like when you have been a Christian for quite a while. But God is God alone so it's impossible to know everything about Him. He keeps revealing Himself in new ways.
In reassurance, Jesus tells them to have courage. What God wants is not that we become afraid when we come into His presence or when He reveals Himself to us but that we reverence Him. God does not reveal Himself to us as the almighty so that we can sulk and feel bad about ourselves and how insufficient we are but so that we can trust in Him totally.

The next step that Peter takes is a depiction of what most Christians would do.
Peter, suddenly bold, said, “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.”

He wants to experience God's amazing power. He isn't just satisfied with watching God work and show forth Himself through another person or means, He wanted a personal encounter. And like Jesus said to Peter come, God keeps calling out to as many that desire Him. He is ever willing to reveal Himself to those that are ready.
The only problem is that soon enough like Peter we lose focus. Just when God is beginning to teach us about Him, when we are beginning to take baby  steps in understanding who God is and His amazing personality, we lose focus! And like Peter we begin to look unto the waves and the winds. We shift our focus from Jesus and our eyes are set on the things that are happening around. We begin to drift from one major event to the other. Our hearts shift from the God that we once pursued and desired to know to the trending happenings.
The end result is that we begin to sink! Christ is the only solid rock, all other ground is sinking sand so, sinking is inevitable when we are not standing on Christ. The things that happen all around us will swallow us up if we choose to focus on them.
In the end we can conclude and say that there's no hope for us in life anymore or we can like Peter humble ourselves and cry out to God for help.

Now this is not to say that we should turn ignore everything that's happening around us because we want to be focused on God but that we focus on Him in our attending to everything else. If only we could see the world through God's eyes, we would see the things that truly deserve our attention and the ones that don't but we can only do that when have our focus on Him.
There's always going to be waves tossing to and fro but in all be still and keep your focus on God.
Blessings!
